in season: what a peach!
Tuesday, September 15, 2009 Peaches are full of fiber, Vitamins A & C, and a great addition to any diet. But more importantly they’re fuzzy. In the world of fruit these days pretty much everything is an antioxidant, or prevents some disease... so when it comes down to choosing ones to eat, why not pick something fun?
A lot of people get freaked out because they’re so fuzzy. And to those who are really against it, feel free to eat a nectarine. I personally think the fuzz is velvety and interesting. Plus, once you wash them well, most of the hairier aspects get rinsed away. Diced up they’re a great addition to fruit salad, mixed into plain yogurt or even thrown into a garden salad for dinner.

For the first time this summer I tried broiling them and could not believe that I had been missing out on this before. It’s really simple to do. Cut the peach in half top to bottom, and then give it a twist. The 2 sides should pop apart & you’ll be able to pull out the pit. Preheat your broiler* & place the peach halves cut side up on a broiler pan or cookie sheet. Sprinkle them with a little cinnamon.
Stick the pan under the broiler (about 6 inches away) and wait about 10-15 minutes, or until they start to turn brown. Keep a close eye on it though, as peaches are full of sugar and this can burn pretty easily.
Serve the warmed peaches simply in a bowl and eat with a fork. It’ll taste like a wonderfully decadent dessert and you’ll totally forget you’re just eating a piece of fruit.
(*please note: if you have a BBQ or grill and would like to use that instead please do. I’m not allowed to use the BBQ as it’s been suggested that I’m a little accident prone & I’m not trusted with propane and fire.)
